Sr Rec Center Newsletter - January 2017

The January Wylie Senior Rec Center Newsletter for adults age 55+ is now available on our City webpage.

Due to the recent hail storm, Wylie Sr Rec Center participants are meeting at Waterbrook Church located at 507 Thomas St.

Join us for beer tasting and conspiracy theories as we visit Lakewood Brewery and the 6th Floor Museum. Create your own popsicle snowflakes, compete in our Texas Hold 'Em tournament, and make yummy popcorn treats to start off the New Year.

Due to the recent hail storm, Wylie Sr Rec Center participants are meeting at Waterbrook Church located at 507 Thomas St.

Join us for fried food and flowers as we visit the State Fair and Dallas Arboretum. Compete in a pie-baking contest, practice your bean bag throwing, and paint a pumpkin to take home with you at the Fall Festival on October 7th.

Home School Recreation Classes


Check out the extensive home school classes Wylie Recreation Center has to offer this fall!
Home School Sewing - A stitch in time saves nine - or sew they say. Earn an Art credit while enhancing fine motor skills. Boost reading comprehension and apply math. Learn to read and follow directions, then cut and pin fabric. Meet new friends while creating unique, one-of-a-kind, sewn pieces.
Home School Ballroom Dance - Take a break and dance! Earn a PE credit while developing rhythmic skills, enhancing your confidence, and familiarizing yourself with dance etiquette. Curriculum includes rigorous and fun instruction in popular social dances, skills required for formal gatherings, and proper attire.
Home School Tennis - Learn the thrilling game of tennis! This combination of excitement and effort develops focus, stamina, and confidence. Instruction of basic techniques includes serving, volleying, and forehand/backhand strokes that build a solid tennis foundation. Have loads of fun while improving skills with this United States Tennis Association Quickstart curriculum.
Home School Basketball - Take your game to the next level! Training by Team USA Basketball standards, increase physical and mental endurance, become a better teammate, and gain overall body conditioning. Practice the six basic basketball skills: ball-handling, footwork, passing and receiving, rebounding, screening, and shooting.

Adult Watercoloring!


Register today for the new adult watercoloring class starting in September!
Brilliant Watercolors - Whether you are discovering your inner artist, honing existing art skills, or stretching your artistic talents in a new direction, watercolor is for you! Master color theory, perspective, composition, design, and shadows while learning the essentials of watercolor and how to control the medium. Create beautiful, unique, irreplaceable pieces of art.
Renata Sharman is a true citizen of the world. She started her career as a ceramics artist in 1972 and began painting in 2008. Her work is influenced by the diverse cultures she has experienced. She enjoys painting traditional art in watercolor, acrylic abstracts on canvas, and traditional oil portraiture on linen. Her goal is to further develop her techniques by exploring new materials, surfaces, and mediums. She desires to bring enriching, multicultural art ideas to the community.

Food Truck Friday and Lawn Chair Theater!


 
Celebrate National Park and Recreation Month at Wylie Recreation Center on July 15! Enjoy Food Truck Friday, 5 – 8:30 PM, and Lawn Chair Theater, 8:45 PM. Participate in an evening filled with The Avengers, food trucks, contests, a superhero photo booth, and more! Bring something to sit on and money for concessions. Dress as your favorite superhero and enter the cosplay contest at 8 PM. Daylight determines start, time is approximate. The Avengers has been edited for language.

Don’t miss out on the exciting summer camps with Engineering For Kids!
Momentum MadnessLadies and gentlemen, start your engines! Explore industrial, electrical, mechanical, and aerospace engineering. Design and construct vehicles that achieve astonishing speeds. Work with the pit crew to design and build bottle rockets, racecars, and power boats.
Amusement Park Engineering - Invent and create your very own amusement park! Absorb physics, expand your creativity, and discover engineering. Work with a group to construct the tallest and fastest roller coaster, design boats, construct dragsters, and generate levitating cars that go faster than a cheetah. Enjoy refreshing ice cream at the end of camp.
Lego Robotics Rescue - Combine LEGOs, laptops, and rescue in this one-of-a-kind experience. Enhance creativity and critical thinking skills while working as a team. Test, build, and program LEGO robots on laptops and navigate them through a destroyed city. Help assess disaster situations, search for survivors, and rebuild the community.
Minecraft Medieval Redstone - Don your armor and draw your sword! Challenge your ingenuity, build problem-solving skills, and expand creativity. Create, explore, and defend your kingdom by engineering cannons, traps, and mine carts all with the use of Redstone. Laptops and software provided.

Wylie Recreation presents Championship Basketball for kids ages 8-12.

Learn basketball fundamentals, social skills, and nutrition recommendations while enhancing abilities through drills, games, and skills assessments.

Sidney Moncrief is a retired NBA player who enjoys teaching the game of basketball to kids. He played college basketball at the University of Arkansas where he went to the Final Four. Sidney went on to play 11 seasons in the NBA and was a five-time NBA All-Star and two-time Defensive Player of the Year winner. Coach Moncrief and his team of highly experienced instructors have coached at the college level and in the NBA.

Scott Horwitz has been the executive Director for 1st Class Kids since May 2006. His program empowers kids to make healthier food choices by providing opportunities to experiment with various flavors and food groups while teaching nutrition. Scott brings his years of experience of being a chef to the classroom to give kids the opportunity to play with food, because food should be fun!

Due to recent hail damage, our hours and location have temporarily changed. Join us 9am-2pm Monday through Friday at Wylie Recreation Center located at 300 Country Club Rd, Building 200. Line Dance, Zumba, and other activities will be held on Saturdays at the same location.








In May take a Store Trip, visit Athen's Fish Hatchery, or the Audie Murphy Cotton Museum!

Join us for a FREE Pancake Breakfast, provided by Garnet Hill Rehabilitation. Get moving with friends every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning at Walk & Talk. We also have many exciting field trips in the month of March including an SMU Walking Trip, a visit to the Botanical Research Institute, and a day trip to the historical City of Farmersville.
